I have been photographing people, companies and events for more than fifteen years, self-employed since 2011. Before that I trained as an electrical engineer, which is probably why I still like knowing how a thing works before I point a camera at it.
My work sits somewhere between reportage and staged portraiture. I am less interested in the polished version of a person than in the moment just before or after it, when the posture drops and something real shows up. That applies whether I am photographing an actor for an editorial or a managing director who would rather be anywhere else.
Clients range from local businesses and start-ups to international groups: Adidas, Nike, TSMC, Lufthansa, GSK, Red Bull, ON Running, Fujitsu, A. Lange & Söhne, EEX AG, Booking.com and ZDF. Editorial work has run in Wired, Der Spiegel, Vanity Fair, Süddeutsche Zeitung, VICE and The Red Bulletin.
I have photographed the actors Frederick Lau, Lars Eidinger, Christian Friedel and Sam Riley, and covered the ESMC groundbreaking ceremony in Dresden. Alongside Dresden I work regularly in Leipzig and Berlin, and travel across Germany and Europe for assignments.
Shoots run in English whenever that is easier for the team. Briefings, on-set direction, licence terms and delivery all work the same way in either language.
How a shoot runs
We start with a short call about the goal, the look and any practical constraints: who is being photographed, where, and what the pictures have to do afterwards. If it helps, I put together a small moodboard so nobody is guessing.
On the day I arrive on time and set up discreetly, usually in a meeting room or a reception area, so the working day can carry on around us. Most people relax within a couple of minutes, which is when the useful frames start.
Edited images follow within five to seven working days, in print resolution and in formats sized for web and social. For events there is a first selection within 48 hours, or the same evening if the press office needs it.
Usage rights are agreed in writing before we shoot: scope, territory and duration are set out in the quote, so nothing is left open once the pictures are in use.
